Port Authority Civilian Memorial Quilt
The Port Authority Civilian Memorial Quilt was dedicated on September 9,
2006 at the Marriott Financial Center,
NYC to the NY/NJ Port Authority Corporate Headquarters and will be on
permanent display at that location. Thanks
to Ken Ringler, Executive Director, Theresa Riccardelli, Reverend Kevin
Carter, Andrea Bair and all Port Authority families.
Robin Pappas, Team Leader, Sharon Jones, Co-Leader, led construction of
this
quilt, Lula Henley, cross-stitching, all from Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
This quilt follows a similar pattern as the Port Authority Police Quilt,
with a log cabin design that has been tilted,
turned or placed at random. The blocks are not repetitive or uniform,
meaning each block has a slightly different
form and a varying array of fabrics. The most wonderful thing about this
style is that it is easy to incorporate all
the personal touches (i.e. symbols and poems, patches that are unique to the
USA and the New York/New Jersey
Port Authority and most importantly, the victims). The photos are the center
of each block. Each precious photo is
printed on off-white fabric with strips of dark blues & reds. The darker
shades of reds and blues are used so the
photos clearly stand out. The names of the victims are printed on the photo.
Each 18" block contains one photo.
The Quilt is hand quilted by Jean Kwiatkowski, Byron, IL. The quilt measures
approx. 70" x 80".
Special thanks to Jeannie's Just Sew Shop, Byron, IL. for providing her shop for the hand quilting work by Jean Kwiatkowski.
