Janet and Sharon wanted to join our mission of preservation and in doing so have
embroidered this beautiful poem, and have brought out its beauty by having it
set within a beautiful frame. This poem will be dedicated and donated to the
families of 9/11 and will accompany the Victims Quilt to New York. We wish to
thank the poems author, David J. Carr for allowing us to adopt this
extraordinary poem as our organizational poem. We chose this poem because it
tells the story of our volunteers and it mission of preservation.
Extraordinary people with boundless compassion, humble hands and perpetual
dedication have come together in a time America needs strength and unity. This
poem reflects the hearts and strength of members of America's 9/11 Memorial
Quilts Org.
Memory Quilts
We sew this seam to console
those in the here and now, while we honor those who fell.
We sew this seam to remind the world yet to come, there is a deeper story to
tell.
Our fore
fathers sowed our fields with dreams of a better life.
Freedom rained in the land after many years of bitter strife.
In a field of
blue, 13 stars were marked to show that America stood united and true.
In a field of blue, 50 stars were marked as our nation of immigrants grew.
New York and
her golden door of opportunity changed the whole world
New York and her Two Towers stood tall as symbols of the Free World
The Fates cut
short the threads of life for many on that clear, sunny September 11th
day.
The Fates ripped rents in the fabric of the nation in such a sudden and abrupt
way.
What was the
unthinkable horror became the awful and final reality.
The citadel for the world’s trade had fallen to senseless brutality.
In a moment,
all that was left, of the scrapers of the sky, were piles of wreckage and debris
while huge plumes of dust enveloped all around as it churned and swirled.
In our shock,
we gave pause for all of the fallen fathers, mothers, husbands, wives, sons and
daughters as three of “New York’s bravest” raised the American flag, unfurled.
As each piece
of fabric is conjoined by the thread of all those cut down in their prime.
As each day passes our nation heals wounds left behind, sealed by each stitch in
time
We sew this
seam to show that as humans we should be closely knit.
We sew this seam to show that symbols of remembrance need not be carved in
stone, but made with care by humble hands and a sewing kit
We sew this
seam bound together by common threads, armed with needles instead of swords with
basket hilts.
We sew this seam to keep the many fallen victims alive in the fabric of these
memory quilts.
